How to apply for Name Change After Marriage in Maharashtra online

Step by step.

  1. Get your marriage certificate first. This is your main proof. If you don't have it yet, register the marriage and get the certificate (see the Marriage Registration guide). Many offices accept the certificate alone for a simple surname change.
  2. Make an affidavit. Get a notarised affidavit on stamp paper stating your old name, your new name, and that you are changing it because of marriage. A notary or lawyer prepares this, usually in a day.
  3. Publish in two newspapers. Place a small name-change notice in two newspapers — one English and one Marathi/local. Keep the printed copies. These newspaper ads are compulsory — without them the Gazette will reject your application.
  4. Apply for the Gazette online. Go to dgps.maharashtra.gov.in (Maharashtra's Government Printing department), create an account, fill the name-change form, and upload your affidavit, the two newspaper ads, an ID proof and your marriage certificate.
  5. Pay the fee and submit. Pay the Gazette fee online (around ₹1,100). After the office checks your documents, your new name is published in the Maharashtra Government Gazette.
  6. Download the Gazette notification. Once published, download the Gazette PDF — this is your legal proof of the new name.Keep a few copies; you will need it for each document you update.
  7. Update your documents — Aadhaar first. Using the Gazette and marriage certificate, change your name on Aadhaar first, then PAN, passport, voter ID, bank accounts, driving licence and ration card.Do Aadhaar first — many services copy your name straight from Aadhaar.
Sahaay never takes money, never asks for your OTP, and never asks for your Aadhaar, PAN or any documents. If anyone asks for these in Sahaay's name, it is a fraud.

Good to know

Note: changing your name after marriage is not legally required. Many places accept just the marriage certificate; but a Gazette entry makes updating every document easier. Update Aadhaar first, since many departments pull your name from Aadhaar.
